Gender and the Definite Article
Singular Forums
All French nous, unlike English noun, have a gender. Every noun is either masculine or femmine. Nouns that refer specifically to males (people or animals), such as father, son, etc,...are masculine. Those that refer to femalé (people or animals), such as mother, daughter, ect.., are feminine. For most other nouns, gender is usually arbitrary and must be memorized.
The definite article (the) that accompanies masculine nouns is le. La accompanies feminine nouns. L' is used before masculine or feminine nouns beginning with a vowed or silent h.
Masculine
- Le gaçon : boy, cậu bé
- Le frère : brother, anh trai
- Le père: father, bố
- Le chien: dog, con chó
- Le chat: cat, con mèo
- Le musée: museum, viện bảo tàng
- Le marché: market, chợ, siêu thị
- le salon: living room, phòng khách
- l'ami: (male) friend bạn trai
- l'homme: man người đàn ông
- la fille: girl con gái
- la soeur sister chị, em gái
- la mère mother mẹ
- la chienne dog con chó cái
- la chatte cat con mèo nhỏ
- la plage beach biển
- la boutique shop cửa hàng
- la chambre bedroom phòng ngủ
- l'amie (female) friend bạn gái
- l'épée sword lưỡi kiếm, lưỡi giáo
But:
- le héros : hero anh hùng
- le haricot: bean quả đậu, quả đỗ

1. Complète the following with the correct form of the dèinite article le, la or l':
